Foraging + Drawing Workshop Oct. 24, Part of Weeklong Kelly Yarbrough Residency
BROWNVILLE - What kinds of information help you know your local environment better? Is knowing the facts about a place the same thing as being in relationship with it?
Artist Kelly Yarbrough, founder of the Tallgrass Artist Residency, will explore questions like these in a facilitated drawing workshop that incorporates foraging, close observation and storytelling. “Foraging and Drawing” will be held Saturday, Oct. 24, from 1:00 to 4:00pm at The Antiquarium, 309 Water Street.
This workshop is friendly to all drawing levels, and supplies will be provided. Weather permitting, participants will spend some time walking outdoors and should dress appropriately. The cost is $25 per person. To register, call 402.681.1901 or email BECAHinfo@gmail.com.
Yarbrough is a Kansas-based artist and arts administrator whose work takes shape in the studio, the field and spaces in between. Through large-scale, mixed media drawings, she represents a sustained and evolving relationship with the tallgrass prairie—one of the most endangered ecosystems on Earth. Her work invites a sense of intimacy with place and seeks to foster a deeper literacy of the landscapes we each call home.
In addition to the workshop, Yarbrough will become The Antiquarium’s first ever artist in residence. She will spend the week in Brownville Oct. 23-29 walking, writing and conducting research. “I’m looking forward to meeting people in Brownville, meeting the landscapes (and waterscapes) and learning about how this little town sustains its creative energy,” she said.
The artists holds an MFA from Kansas State University and a BA in Art and English from Austin College. In 2016, she founded the Tallgrass Artist Residency, a program that hosts prairie-connected artists in the tiny rural community of Matfield Green, KS. Her writing and artwork have been featured in publications such as The New Territory Magazine, Contra Viento and Symphony of the Flint Hills Field Journal, and she has presented at TEDx Austin College.
The Oct. 24 workshop and weeklong residency are presented by the Brownville Education Center for Arts and Humanities, which manages The Antiquarium. Both events are made possible by a grant from the Sherwood Foundation.
